Munjya Review: Munjya is beyond fear….how is this film of Sharvari Wagh

Munjya Film Review:
Abhay Verma, Mona Singh and Sharvari Wagh's film 'Munjya' has been released in theaters today i.e. on 7 June 2024. This film is a horror-comedy drama film. If you are planning to watch this film this weekend, then definitely read our review before that.

Every person living in Konkan will have many stories of Munjya, Hadal and Devchar which they had heard from their grandmother or grandmother. For years these stories have been told to the coming generations. 'Tumbad' was one of those stories. Even today when we go to the village, mother says, "Don't go out in the evening, Munjya will come." Yes, ghosts also have a timing and place in Konkan.

Some ghosts are available in the afternoon, some in the evening, some between 12-4 pm, and some like to stay in a particular area, those ghosts are not very comfortable going out of their area. Even today, when the village elders show many peepal trees in the village and say with great confidence that Munjya is tied to this tree, then you start sweating even in cold air. When the trailer of 'Munjya' was released, I was curious to know how this film would be made in Hindi. And for the sake of this curiosity, I watched the film. The film is fun. And also justifies the horror comedy genre.

Story

If a Brahmin boy dies within 10 days of Munj Upanayana ceremony, i.e. the sacred thread ceremony, then he becomes a Brahmarakshas. This Brahmarakshas is also called 'Munjya'. This Munjya starts following one of his relatives to fulfill his unfulfilled desires. In the year 1952, a child living in Konkan is adamant on marrying Munni, who is older than him. To fulfill his desire, he does not even hesitate to sacrifice his sister, but during this his sister is saved. But this child dies. Then that child becomes 'Munjya'. Now how does this 'Munjya' take revenge from his sister, does his unfulfilled desire get fulfilled? How does this 'Munjya' clash with Bittu (Abhay) and Bela (Sharvari Wagh)? To know the answer to these questions, you will have to go to the theater and watch 'Munjya'.

Aditya Sarpotdar's 'Munjya' is a horror-super natural comedy film. This film is completely different from traditional horror films. This film scares you and also makes you laugh a lot. Because even though Munjya is called Brahmarakshas, but intellectually he is a child. A child who is spoiled, mischievous and keeps troubling others. And these habits of his entertain the audience.

For example, on one hand Munjya kills some of Bittu's close people, and on the other hand he threatens to make his sister bald if she doesn't do his work. Many times he annoys the other person so much by saying the same thing again and again that we say, 'Now stop it friend'. This film has everything - drama, comedy, romance and intimacy. Like Maddock's 'Stree' and 'Bhediya', this film also entertains you a lot.

Direction and Writing

Aditya Sarpotdar has previously made a horror comedy in Marathi called 'Jhombivali'. This film did well at the box office. Aditya now knows very well how to keep the audience engaged from the beginning till the end. And he has used this talent of his in the film 'Munjya' properly. Making a feature film with CGI characters was not easy. But this challenge has been handled well by Aditya Sarpotdar and the film's writers Niren Bhatt and Yogesh Chandekar. Even though this film is made for the national audience, Aditya has done a wonderful job on its detailing.

There is a scene in the opening of this film where during a festival going on in the village, 'Sankasur' (a masked character whom children fear) is shown. Usually children get scared of such ghost-like characters dressed in black. But the little child who later becomes Munjya is not afraid. He growls at Sankasur in such a way that the person who has become a demon takes two steps back. The director has done excellent character building in many such small scenes. The actors have also fully supported him.

Acting

Sharvari Wagh, Mona Singh and Abhay Verma are playing the lead roles in ' Munjya' . But the superhero of the story is Munjya. Abhay Verma also does complete justice to his role. Abhay has earlier shown a glimpse of his talent in Sandeep Singh's film 'Safed'. Seeing his acting, it can be said that this is just the beginning. Mona Singh has played the role of Marathi Bittu's Punjabi mother. Her character is also interesting. Sharvari has also acted well in the film. Many theater actors have been cast in the film, who have played their roles honestly. Bahubali's 'Kattappa' Satyaraj has brought an interesting twist in this film.

CGI, Cinematography and Music

For the first time in the history of horror films made in our country, a CGI character has been presented as a villain in 'Munjya'. And the way this character has acted, this experiment can be called a successful one. Now we will be curious to know what more wonders can be seen using this technology in the coming times. Whenever a beach has to be shown in films, the Hindi film industry either goes to Goa or outside the country. But the Konkan and Gujarat coastline also has many amazing locations and virgin beaches, where one can see beautiful views of nature like Maldives and Mauritius. The Konkan region is also called 'India's California'. In 'Munjya', cinematographer Saurabh Goswami has presented the beauty of Konkan and the traditional structure of the houses there to the audience with his unmatched camera work.

The most important thing in a horror film is music, if the music is not right, then the horror film becomes a joke. But in 'Munjya', Sachin-Jigar do a great job of creating an atmosphere of fear with their music.

to see or not to see

If you like hardcore horror movies, then this movie is not for you. This movie is based on one of the stories told from generation to generation. So if you go looking for logic in it, you will not find it. But for a new cinematic experience, definitely watch this movie. Not only adults, but children can also enjoy this movie a lot. Because an American great man named Neil Gaiman has said that fairy tales do not tell children that dragons exist. Children already know that dragons are real. But fairy tales give children the confidence that dragons can also be killed.
