The Indian cricket team had a very poor start while chasing the target of 200 runs set by Australia in their first match of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. In the first over of the innings, Mitchell Starc dismissed Ishan Kishan for a golden duck. After this, Josh Hazlewood also dismissed captain Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer, who came to bat at number 4, in the second over of the innings.
Ishan, Rohit and Shreyas Iyer all three could not open their account of runs. This is the first time in India's One Day International history that three of the top 4 batsmen in the batting order have been out on the score of 0.
Apart from this, this is the second time in India's World Cup history that both the opening batsmen have been out on the score of 0. Earlier this had happened in the match against Zimbabwe in the 1983 World Cup. In that match, Indian openers Sunil Gavaskar and Krishnamachari Srikkanth were out on 0.
It is noteworthy that the Australian team, which won the toss and came to bat first, was all out for 199 runs in 49.3 overs. For Australia, Steve Smith scored 46 runs and David Warner scored 41 runs and in the lower order Mitchell Starc played an important inning of 28 runs.
