'Around 140 such cases every year', why is there controversy over the death of Agniveer Amritpal?

Opposition parties in Punjab have expressed surprise at not giving military last rites. According to the army, about 140 such cases are happening every year. When in such a case which happens every year, the army did not give the honor to the deceased soldier, then why is there a controversy over the death of Agniveer Amritpal.

SP MP from Moradabad, UP, ST Hasan has also raised questions regarding this. He said that deceased Agniveer was not given the status of martyr because he had joined the army only for four years. Aam Aadmi Party's state MP Raghav Chadha has also questioned the central government regarding this. He said that we had already refused to implement this scheme. This is a dangerous experiment.

When did Amritpal Singh join the army?

19-year-old Amritpal Singh became Agniveer in the Army under the Agneepath Scheme in December 2022 and was posted in Jammu and Kashmir. He was found dead at a forward post on 11 October 2023. The Army sent his body to his home along with the Junior Commissioned Officer and four other soldiers, but the Army did not give military last rites to the deceased Agniveer.

Why not given guard of honour?

The Indian Army issued a statement in this regard on social media X, according to which Amritpal Singh died due to self-inflicted gunshot wound. Deceased Agniveer has committed suicide and the cause of death is self-inflicted injury. Due to which Guard of Honor has not been given as per rules. The Army also said that a Court of Inquiry is being conducted to investigate the matter.

There are about 140 cases every year

According to the statement issued by the army on social media X, every year since 2001, 100 to 140 soldiers have died due to suicide or self-inflicted gunshot. In all such cases, it is not allowed to give guard of honor to the deceased. The Army also said that in such cases, according to the post, due priority is given to the distribution of financial assistance/relief for the last rites to the family of the deceased soldier. The army said that it does not discriminate against any soldier. Be it Agniveer or the soldiers recruited in the army before this scheme.

How many Agniveer have been recruited so far?

According to media reports, this is the first such incident in the Agniveer case in which a soldier has died. Agneepath Scheme was launched by the Central Government on 14 June 2022 for the recruitment of soldiers in all three wings of the Army, under which youth are being recruited in the Army for 4 years. The Army has so far recruited 40,000 Agniveers in two batches. The first batch has joined the army after training in the regimental centres.
