Indian wrestling has been running into controversies since January this year. First, famous wrestlers of the country made allegations of sexual exploitation against the President of Wrestling Federation of India, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and staged a sit-in at Jantar Mantar for action against him. This matter had not stopped yet that another ruckus broke out. This happened regarding giving direct entry to Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia in the Asian Games. This thing did not go down well with the rest of the wrestlers and they raised questions as to why these two were not called in the trials.
Wrestling trials are to be held for the Asian Games to be played in September-October this year . But at this time the Adhoc Committee, which is looking after the work of Wrestling Federation of India, had said a few days ago that Vinesh and Bajrang will be exempted from the trials and they will play directly in the Asian Games. However, this is not the first time in Indian sports that some selected players are exempted from the trials and then there is a ruckus about it. This history is old.
Where did the latest case reach
Before going into the past, let us know how far the latest case regarding wrestling trials has reached. After the decision taken by the adhoc committee, the disappointment of the rest of the wrestlers came to the fore. The last woman wrestler, Panghal, vociferously registered her protest regarding this. The last one who played in Vinesh's category 53 kg said that why special entry to Vinesh? He also approached the Delhi High Court regarding this. A hearing was held on this last Thursday and the court sought an answer from the adhoc committee on the exemption granted to Bajrang and Vinesh in the trials.
Not only this, the parents of some other wrestlers had gheraoed the adhoc committee and asked them questions on the matter of giving exemption to two wrestlers. He called this decision wrong.
Nikhat-Mary Kom's case caught fire
This type of controversy was also seen in boxing before the Tokyo Olympics. The Olympic medalist returned in 2019 after winning a medal at the World Championships. After this, the Indian Boxing Federation decided to send Mary Kom to the Olympics without trials. Nikhat Zareen was angered by this and raised her voice against this decision. Meanwhile, Mary Kom had questioned the existence of Nikhat Zareen and said in an interview, 'Who Nikhat Zareen?'
Nikhat, however, was successful in winning her battle and Mary Kom had to give trials before going to the Olympics. Mary Kom defeated Nikhat in the trials and got the Olympic ticket.
Sushil Kumar and Narsingh case also worsened
Even before the Rio Olympics in 2016, there was a stir in the wrestling world. That year, Narsingh Yadav got India an Olympic quota in the 74 kg weight category. The federation had decided that only Narsingh would go for the Olympics, but Sushil Kumar, who won India a medal in London Olympics-2012, had put a hurdle in it and demanded trials. Sushil had approached the Delhi High Court regarding this. Later Narsingh was caught in doping and Sushil went to play in the Olympics.
There was a ruckus in table-tennis
Last year the Commonwealth Games were played in Birmingham. When India's table tennis team was announced for these games, female player Diya Chitale had lodged her protest. He had approached the Delhi High Court for this. Diya said that the selection criteria were not followed in the team selected by the CoA running the Table Tennis Federation. After this, Diya got a place in the team in place of Archana Kamath. Like Diya, male player Manush Shah also appealed in the Delhi High Court. But he was not selected and he was included as a reserve player.
