Railway Board is planning to introduce non-AC, general category trains to meet the needs of migrant workers and labor class groups across the country. This decision has been taken after the study, in which those states have been identified, where a large number of passengers belonging to low income group have to face long waiting. Earlier, such special trains trains were started only during festivals or peak season. With overcrowding in passenger trains becoming a matter of concern, it has been proposed to make such arrangements permanent.
The new trains running from January 2024 will have non AC LHB coaches and will have only sleeper and general category service. Railways has not yet decided any name for these trains. Earlier, during the coronavirus crisis, the Railways had run migrant special trains to return workers to their native places.
Trains will run from other states including UP, Bihar, Jharkhand
According to the Railway Board, new special trains are being planned for the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, West Bengal, Punjab, Assam, Gujarat, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh. According to officials, most of the skilled-unskilled workers, artisans, laborers and others from these states go to metros and big cities for work. Trains will be run for these people, in which only sleeper-general class coaches will be used. An official said that the migrant special trains will have a minimum of 22 to a maximum of 26 coaches. Instead of seasonal, they will be run permanently throughout the year.
This is also planning
These will also be included in the regular time table, so that passengers will be able to make reservations in advance. Officials said that to make the Indian Railways future-ready, only two types of coaches, LHB coaches and Vande Bharat coaches, will remain in service. Presently 28 types of coaches are in service. An official said that this will reduce the cost of repair and travel will also be cheaper.
