24 importers of the country have tax evasion of 11 thousand crore rupees, the government sent notices

The senior officer of the agency said in the media report that so far theft of about Rs 11,000 crore has been detected in about 24 cases and we have sent notices to seven units in this regard.

The Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) and the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) have detected alleged Integrated GST evasion of Rs 11,000 crore by 24 large importers. The senior officer of the agency said in the media report that so far theft of about Rs 11,000 crore has been detected in about 24 cases and we have sent notices to seven units in this regard. These notices were sent to the importers of Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai jurisdictions in the last 20 days. The agencies have started the process of sending notices to other importers as well. The companies which have evaded tax are related to steel, pharmaceuticals, gems and jewelery and textile business.

How tax evasion came to know

The information about tax evasion in these cases has been obtained on the basis of data prepared by Advanced Analytics in Indirect Taxation (ADVIT) . In the ET report, the official said that several instances of erroneous availing of input tax credit have come to the fore, adding that notices were sent only in cases where the data was independently verified and checked by field formations. The government is now considering further strengthening the Advanced Analytics in Indirect Taxation (ADVIT) to capture new information about importers and exporters .

Government can make this change

The changes being discussed include comparison report of tax paid, tax payable in GSTR-9 by taxpayers under selected jurisdiction for a financial year. Officers can now view the supply place, tax amount and ledger used at one place. So that they can get an overall view of the payment made by the taxpayer under their taxpayer dashboard. By the way, the government is going to start a two-month intensive campaign from May 16 to detect fake invoices, fake GST registration and wrong input tax credit.
