Cases of eye allergy are increasing due to air pollution, know the methods of prevention from experts

Air pollution remains a major cause of eye problems among people of all ages. It can cause irritation and inflammation, due to which the eyes may become red, watery, and other vision-related problems.

Sneha Kumari: Increasing pollution or say bad air is the main reason for increasing serious respiratory diseases. It is also responsible for eye allergies, which suggests that the effects of pollution are not just limited to the heart and lungs. Quoting an IANS report, experts say that the increasing cases of severe conjunctivitis in the eyes due to deteriorating air quality these days has put a lot of burden on the hospitals. Common problems caused by increased air pollution include dry eyes, conjunctivitis and eye allergies.

Dr. Himanshu Garkoti, Ophthalmologist, RML Hospital, said, “We have observed that the number of patients complaining of ocular allergy and conjunctivitis due to air pollutants is increasing in the hospital. In such a situation, the risk increases for the elderly and those who have recently undergone eye surgery.

He said, “Due to the dense fog, the chances of allergic irritation are more in the morning and evening, so it is advisable to wear glasses while going out for morning walk, especially for the elderly and children.”

Pollution causes damage to eyes

Dr. Sandeep Buttan, Technical Lead, Eye Health and Health System Strengthening, Sightsavers India told News9, “Decreasing air quality has become a major concern today. This danger has arisen due to increasing industries and deteriorating ecological balance. It not only pollutes the environment but also causes various health problems like breathing problems, nose and throat irritation and serious eye problems. When Particulate Matter (PM2.5) enters the human body, it starts affecting the lungs and then mixed with the blood, it gradually affects other organs of the body, causing many diseases. .

Dr. Garkoti said, air pollution remains a major cause of eye problems among people of all ages. It can cause irritation and inflammation, due to which the eyes may become red, watery, and other vision-related problems.

“Cornea is the most sensitive part of the eye and it can be affected by air pollution. Since only a thin layer of precorneal tear (tear) film protects the eyes from harmful substances, they are more vulnerable to various diseases. Dry eyes, conjunctivitis and eye allergies like itching, redness, swelling of the eyelids and blurred vision are some of the eye problems caused by pollution.

Nitric oxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide are air pollutants that can cause skin problems. In addition, elevated levels of carbon monoxide and dioxide can cause eye irritation.

Reducing exposure to outdoor air pollutants and staying indoors can reduce the risk of eye allergies and infections. That is, eye allergies and infections can be prevented by staying indoors and reducing exposure to outdoor air pollution.

Ways to protect eyes from air pollution

Dr Sandeep said, “Staying hydrated is very important so keep drinking water. Drink plenty of water. It removes toxins and also helps in the formation of tears in the eyes, which is an essential function of the eyes. It prevents dry eyes syndrome and irritation under the eyelids. One of the simplest ways to cure the damage caused by pollution is to blink your eyes properly. When you blink, a special protective tear film is produced which protects your eyes, moisturizes them and prevents pollutants from entering.

Dr. Sandeep said that pay attention to your diet, the way you can strengthen your immunity by what you eat, this also applies to your eyesight. Apart from green leafy vegetables and fruits, your daily diet should include adequate amounts of vitamin A and omega-3 fatty acids. They are good for your eyes.

Due to the severe level of pollution your eyes are already suffering from heavy damage. In such a situation, watching the screen for a long time can further increase the problem. To recover, you need to give maximum rest to your eyes.

If you can't limit your risk, try not to increase the problem. Avoid using heavy eye makeup and contact lenses that can trap pollutants inside the eye. Wash hands and face after coming home to follow hygiene.

Using eye drops as prescribed by the doctor can also help in repairing the damage done to your eyes.

Washing the eyes regularly with clean water and/or using eye drops as prescribed by the doctor may help. It is also advised to wash your face and eyes after coming from outside so that any dirt and infection, if any, can be removed. Avoid wearing lenses in case of eye irritation and wash hands frequently so that dirty hands do not touch the eyes. Using air purifiers inside the house can help reduce the level of air pollutants present in the house.
