IPL: Bairstow's stormy half century, Hyderabad's easy win over Punjab

Sunrisers Hyderabad opened the account of victory in IPL 2021 by defeating Punjab Kings by nine wickets.
The target of 121 runs was achieved by a team led by David Warner by losing one wicket. The team's winning hero was opener Johnny Bairstow (63 not out) and bowler. The Punjab Kings team was bowled out for 120 runs, batting first. For him, Shah Rukh Khan and Mayank Agarwal played innings of 22-22 runs. Khalil Ahmed took the maximum three wickets for Hyderabad. Hyderabad has won the first victory after three consecutive defeats. At the same time, Punjab has suffered a third defeat in four matches. For this match, Punjab made three changes to include Fabian Allen, Moises Henriques and Murugan Ashwin in their final 11. At the same time, with the return of Kane Williamson in the Hyderabad team, Kedar Jadhav and Siddharth (one wicket for 27) also got a chance.

Chasing the target, David Warner and Johnny Bairstow started batting vigorously. Captain Warner hit a four off the point on the third ball of the innings. In the next over, Bairstow showed his intentions by hitting fours and sixes off Fabian Allen's balls. In this way, Hyderabad with successive fours and sixes completed 50 runs in six overs of the powerplay without loss. After this, Punjab tried to curb the run of Hyderabad through the spin of Deepak Hooda and Murugan Ashwin. This soon gained in the form of Warner's wicket.

Warner was caught by Fabian Allen in the hands of Mayank Agarwal. The Hyderabad captain hit three fours and a six in his 37-run innings. After this, Johnny Bairstow and Kane Williamson did not let the team do any more damage. The two shared a 48-run partnership for the second wicket. Bairstow remained unbeaten with 63 runs and Williamson 16 runs with three fours and three sixes.

Punjab bowlers could not play full 20 overs

Earlier, Sunrisers Hyderabad stopped the Punjab Kings for just 120 runs in 19.4 overs due to the great performance of the bowlers. Punjab Kings captain KL Rahul decided to bat after winning the toss but on a rough track, the team struggled to score runs from the beginning. Punjab batsmen had no answer to the spin of Abhishek Sharma (two wickets for 24 runs in four overs) and Rashid Khan (one wicket for 17 runs from four overs). At the same time, fast bowler Khalil Ahmed also took three wickets for 21 runs in four overs with a brilliant mix of slow balls.

In the first over itself, Rashid Khan caught the catch of Mayank Agarwal off Abhishek Sharma. He hit the first four of the team off Khalil Ahmed in the third over but Bhuvneshwar Kumar drove Rahul (4) in the next over. Playing the first match of the season, Jadhav caught him. In the Powerplay, Punjab's team could score just 32 runs on one wicket. In the seventh over, Chris Gayle hit a four off Khalil's ball but on the last ball of the same over, Rashid corrected the mistake made in the first over by catching a brilliant catch of Mayank. He scored 22 runs in 25 balls with the help of two fours. The first ball of the next over, Warner runs out with a straight throw to wicket before Nicolas Puran gets a strike.

Shahrukh Khan finally scored

Rashid Khan, who came for bowling in the ninth over, trapped Chris Gayle to end his innings of 15 off 17 balls. Punjab's team was able to score 53 runs for four wickets in the first 10 overs, during which only five fours were hit. Deepak Hooda (13) hit a reverse sweep against Rashid but was lbw to Abhishek in the 12th over. He resorted to DRS against the on-field umpire's decision but had to return to the pavilion due to the umpires' call. Shahrukh Khan hit the first six off Abhishek in the 14th over, for the first time, the team's run rate rose above six. However, in the same over, Henriques (14) came out of the crease to take a big shot and wicketkeeper Johnny Bairstow left no stone unturned to scatter the gills.

Shah Rukh hit his and the team's second six against Siddharth Kaul on a free hit. Punjab completed 100 runs on the second Gayd of the 17th over. On the fourth ball of this over, Khalil Ahmed showed Fabian Allen (06) the path of the pavilion. In an attempt to score fast, Shahrukh Khalil was caught catching Abhishek standing on the boundary. He scored 22 runs in 17 balls. In the last over, Vijay Shankar dismissed Mohammed Shami and dismissed Punjab's innings for 120 runs.
