Ivory Coast Prime Minister Hamed Bakayoko has passed away. He breathed his last in Freiburg, Germany. Bakayko was suffering from cancer. He was 56 years old. He had celebrated his 56th birthday two days earlier. President Alsen Otta said in a Twitter post that our country is in mourning. He said, "It is very sad that Prime Minister Hameed Bakayko has died in Germany due to cancer. Bakayko was a big politician, a model for our youth, a very generous and loyal person. "
Bakayoko was named Prime Minister in July 2020 following the sudden death of his predecessor Amadou Gon Culibli. On 18 February, he went to France for medical examination. After this, he was sent to Freiburg in southwestern Germany. The government said in a statement on Friday that Otta had met Bakayoko during his visit to France last week. Considering the state of health of the Prime Minister, it was recommended that he be admitted to the hospital for a few more days.

Eight months ago, the then Prime Minister of Ivory Coast, Emadu Gon Golibli died. He returned to the country six days earlier after undergoing treatment for two months in France. He was 61. He also underwent a transplant in the year 2012. Culibli was also the presidential candidate of the ruling party of Ivory Coast.
On Monday, Otta named his close confidant and Chief of Staff Patrick Achi the interim prime minister in place of Bakayko. Also, the President's younger brother Tenay Birhima Auatara was named interim defense minister.
