 Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Narendra Singh Tomar has launched the first edition of the Agri India Hackathon. On the occasion, the Agriculture Minister said that it would promote innovation in the agricultural sector. So there will be a positive change in farming and small farmers will benefit. "Innovation and startups reaching out to villages will benefit small farmers and bring about a big positive change in the field of agriculture," Tomar said. Applications for the Agri India Hackathon will close on January 20, according to the agriculture ministry. The two-month hackathon will have three elimination rounds and at the end 24 winners will be given a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh.

Hackathons can be a solution to agricultural problems

Tomar, who was the chief guest at the event organized by the Pusa-based Indian Institute of Agricultural Research (IARI) under the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmer Welfare and the Council of Agricultural Research of India (ACAR), said Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on research and innovation in agriculture. Attracting attention, Agri India suggested organizing a hackathon. He said the PM stressed the need for the use of digital technology in the field of agriculture and believed that the problems of the agricultural sector could be solved through agri hackathon.

New dimensions joining the agricultural sector

"We need to ensure that the agricultural sector is more profitable, that the youth are attracted to agriculture, that crops are diversified, that the use of fertilizers is gradually declining, that we are moving faster towards organic farming and micro-irrigation," he added. We can reduce the cost of farming, move farmers to more expensive crops, get the full potential of technology, increase productivity, cultivate according to global standards and enrich farmers by exporting more and more. We can ensure the contribution of agriculture to the GDP.

He said that there is no shortage of farmers' labor, the need today is to add new dimensions to the agricultural sector and agri startups can make a huge contribution in this regard.

Innovation will make farming work beneficial

Speaking on the occasion, Minister of State for Agriculture Parshottam Rupala said that innovation would make agriculture work beneficial. Minister of State for Agriculture Kailash Chaudhary, who was present on the occasion, said that this is a very important program in terms of technology. This will have immense potential for growth in the agricultural sector.

Chance to win Rs 1 lakh cash

Agri India Hackathon is a platform that will give students and young startups a chance to express their innovation and creativity. The planning will take place for 60 days. It includes more than 3000 innovations from across the country, more than 5000 participants, more than 100 thinkers, more than 1000 start-ups and more than 50 speakers. There will be a selection of 24 best innovations from different focus areas. Each of them will be given a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh.
