Buta Singh joined the Congress when Jawaharlal Nehru became PM. He later held key positions in the cabinets of Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, PV Narasimha Rao and Dr Manmohan Singh. In addition to being active in national politics, he established his identity as a Dalit leader. He was the General Secretary of the Congress from 1978 to 1980. He later became the Home Minister of India and later when Dr. Manmohan Singh's government came to power at the Center, he became the Governor of Bihar (2004-2006).

Rahul Gandhi tweeted that the country has lost a true public servant and a sincere leader with the death of Sardar Buta Singh. He devoted his entire life to the service of the country and the welfare of the people, for which he will always be remembered. My condolences to his family in these difficult times.
