Secret Service Protection throughout life

From 1965 to 1996, the former President, his wives and children were entitled to Secret Service Protection for a lifetime under the 16A Act. But after an amendment in 1994, the Secret Service Protection was limited to 10 years for those Presidents who have held office since 1 January 1997.

On 10 January 2013, the then President Barack Obama signed the Former Presidents Protection Act 2012. After this, the Secret Service Protection Rules were restored throughout life for George Bush, who was the first President including Obama and all the subsequent Presidents. Richard Nixon was the only President in American history who relinquished his security in 1985.
