Every year on the Triodashi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik, the festival of Dhanteras is celebrated, which falls one day before Diwali. 
Lord Dhanvantari is worshiped on this day and is considered an auspicious day. Buying things like gold, silver jewelery and utensils is considered auspicious on this day. This year Dhanteras is on 13th November i.e. Friday.

This year Dhanteras is November 13 and the evening time is considered suitable for worship. The auspicious time of worship is from 5.28 pm to 5.59 pm. This year this 30 minutes is the best time to worship Dhanteras. Lord Dhanvantari can be worshiped during this period.

The worship of Dhanvantari and Kubera is believed to be a form of Lord Dhanvantari holding a nectar kalash in his hand. They like the yellow thing, i.e. brass and gold, so Dhanteras buys brass or gold or any other metal thing. Dhanvantari, the god of health Dhanvantari and the god of wealth Kubera are worshiped on the day of Dhanteras.

Importance of Dhanteras

It is said that on the Triodashi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik, Lord Dhanvantari appeared during Samudra Manthan with an nectar pot in his hand. It is also believed that Lord Dhanvantari took incarnation for the spread of medicine and science. Dhanvantari Day is celebrated as National Ayurveda Day by the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India.

According to mythology, worshiping Lakshmi on the day of Dhanteras leaves no shortage of money and food and the idol of Lakshmi-Ganesha should also be brought home on this day. It is also customary to light lamps in the evening on the day of Dhanteras. It is called Yama Deepak, which is lit for Yamaraj to avoid untimely death.
