Two years later, Samsung overtook Xiaomi to regain the top position

Pankaj Doval, New Delhi: Two years after losing the crown of top smartphone makers ahead of Xiaomi in India, Samsung has regained top billing, amassing a 24 per cent share in the third quarter, slightly ahead of China's rival by 23 per cent.
Xiaomi's stake fell below 26 per cent in the third quarter of 2019, and the decline for the company came at a time of heightened tensions between India and China.

According to figures released by tracking agency Counterpoint, Xiaomi overtook Samsung during the same quarter two years ago. Xiaomi and other Chinese makers like Vivo, Oppo and Latest Realme have been launching new phones in India for the last few years, investing heavily in sales and marketing and giving them competitive prices. Counterpoint noted that negative consumer sentiment against China has accelerated the trend. Shilpi Jain, a research analyst at the company, said, "Negative sentiment has eased as consumers are also taking into account different criteria while shopping."

Counterpoint said that for the first time since Q3 2018, the supply chain has been affected by the Kovid-19, leaving Xiaomi second. Apart from this there may also be ‘manufacturing barriers’. However, as has been said, Xiaomi may return with strength in the current quarter.

Samsung is making the most of the current situation and is also busy with new launches. The company's M and A series have been the highest earners and their online strategy is also strong. 'Online business for Samsung is growing strongly. We have seen online sales contribute more than 15 per cent to 30 per cent to smartphone volume, ”said Asim Warsi, senior VP, Samsung India, in an interview with the Times of India.
