Sanitizer industries boom in Gujarat after Korona, 319 new plants started in 6 months

AHMEDABAD:
Hand sanitizers are in high demand during the Corona era. As a result, many companies are now involved in the production of personal hygiene products. Surprisingly, 319 new plants for hand sanitizers have been started in Gujarat since April this year. Most of these units are cosmetic hand sanitizers.

State Food and Drug Control Administration (FDCA) Commissioner Dr. HG Koshia said, “Gujarat FDCA has approved construction plans for a total of 350 plants in the pharmaceutical space since April. Most of them are for the production of hand sanitizers. '

Of the new plans for hand sanitizers, 226 are in the cosmetic segment. While Ayurvedic has 86 and Allopathic has 7 units. As a rule, the construction plan of a new FRAMA plant requires the approval of the state drug regulator.

"Of these, 23 new plants have been approved for the production of medical grade oxygen," Koshia said. Only eight plants for bulk drugs, formulations and other drugs have been approved since April.

According to the Drug Commissioner, the companies building new plants for the manufacture of hand sanitizers include Marico, Asian Paints, Requina Pharmaceuticals, Fresio Herbals, Gujarat Lifesciences Pvt Ltd and Ariva Pharma Products.

“Initially supplying adequate sanitizers was a challenge,” he said. However, Gujarat entrepreneurs turned the problem into an opportunity with the active cooperation of the state government in making policy decisions.

The days of shortage of hand sanitizers in the state are now a thing of the past. The state currently has the capacity to produce 20 million liters (LPD) of hand sanitizer per day. Big companies like Zydus Wellness, Adani Wilmer, Iris Lifesciences, Cadila Pharma and Nivea India have also ventured into hand sanitizer production amid growing demand. Some pharma companies have also started making hand sanitizers in their existing plants.

According to Gujarat FDCA data, there are currently 613 units making hand sanitizers in Gujarat. The figure was 228 before the Corona epidemic. A total of 4,775 product licenses have been issued to these manufacturers.
