Dhaka: neighboring countries will not be spared and raping women in Bangladesh. Recently Bangladesh's cabinet has decided to hang the accused of rape instead of maximum punishment. Bangladesh President Mohammed Abdul Hameed signed an ordinance under which the maximum sentence in rape cases was changed from life imprisonment to death sentence.
Spokesperson Anwarul Islam said that the details of what changes have been made in the rules have not been received yet, but the government has agreed that speed trials in rape cases should be done. He said that under the present law, the culprits in rape cases get life imprisonment as maximum punishment. In the current law, if the rape victim dies, then the culprits can be given the death penalty.
The amendment to the Women and Child Harassment Prevention Act was approved by the cabinet headed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, after which the move was taken. Earlier, the maximum punishment in rape cases was life imprisonment. In these days, the MC College in Noakhali and Sayalhat demonstrated the cases of sexual abuse and rape of women in Dhaka's Shahbag Square and various organizations in other parts of the country.
In the last 16 years, 4541 rape cases have been reported in Bangladesh and out of these only 60 accused have been convicted. Bangladesh's Human Rights Organization Group said that incidents of rape in the country are increasing at a very fast pace. Rapists also committed violence during the rape of these women.
The organization says that many rape incidents are not reported to the police for fear of persecution of the overbearing people. On the other hand, Bangladesh's justice system takes years to settle these cases.
