Muslim PSI suspended for beard rejoins duty

Intesar Ali, who was suspended from the post of PSI in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, has now shaved off his beard and has resumed his duties as PSI. It may be noted here that Muslim PSI Intesar Ali was suspended for growing a beard. This police officer was repeatedly urged not to grow a beard. However, he did not remove his beard and eventually ordered his suspension.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat police said that today, October 24, 2020, PSI Intesar Ali had shaved off his beard following the instructions of higher authorities. And has returned to duty assuring compliance with the rules and directives of the police department in the future. Hearing on the report, PSI Intesar Ali has been asked to resume his duties.

Earlier, SP Abhishek Singh of UP's Baghpat district had said that PSI could not grow a beard as per Ali rules. Ali, on the other hand, claims that he sought permission from his superiors to grow a beard, but received no response.

Intesar Ali, 46, has been in the police department for the past 25 years. Ali was often given notice of the dress code, according to a statement from local police. According to the SP of Baghpat, the rules of UP police uniform are clear. He was often warned and given notice, but he paid no heed.

Policemen are not allowed to grow beards across the country. However, they can keep the mustache certain. Last year, the UP police also increased the mustache allowance from Rs 50 to Rs 250. However, in 2013, the Supreme Court in a judgment directed the Maharashtra Police that policemen who wanted to grow a beard during periods of religious significance would have to get permission for it.
