Former Union Minister Dilip Ray convicted in coal scam


New Delhi:
 Former Union Minister Dilip Ray has been convicted in a special court for the coal scam in Manglawar. Special Judge Bharat Paraskar has convicted Dilip Ray, Minister of State (Coal) in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, for criminal conspiracy and other offenses.

The court also convicted two then senior officials of the coal ministry, Pradeep Kumar Banerjee and Nitya Nand Gautam, Castron Technologies Limited (CTL), its directors Mahendra Kumar Aggarwal and Castron Mining Limited (CML). The case relates to alleged irregularities in the allocation of coal blocks in Jharkhand in 1999.

The quantum of sentence will be debated in the court on 14 October. The Special CBI Court in April 2017, accused of fraud, criminal conspiracy and breach of trust against Pradeep Kumar Banerjee and Nityanand Gautam as well as Castron Technologies Limited, and its director Mahendra Kumar Aggarwal, besides Dilip Ray, in April 2017. Dilip Ray was made the coal minister when the NDA government was formed in 1999. Dilip Ray was Minister of State in Atal Bihari Vajpayee's government at the time of the scam. While Pradeep Kumar Banerjee was in the post of Additional Secretary and Project Advisor in the Ministry of Coal. The case relates to the allotment of the Brahmadih coal block in Giridih, Jharkhand.

The Brahmadih coal block was awarded to Ambatan Castron Technologies Limited in which irregularities were observed. Dilip Ray is joining the members of Odisha's ruling party Biju Janata Dal founder. He has also been a minister in Biju Patnaik's government. In 2002, BJD expelled Dilip Ray from the party. After which Dilip Ray joined BJP. Dilip Ray also owns the hotel chain.
