Designer Bhanu Athaiya, who won the first Oscar award for India, dies


Indian costume designer Bhanu Athaiya passed away at the age of 91 on Thursday. 
Bhanu Athaiya won the first Academy and Oscar award for India. He has left behind a great legacy of Indian costume designer.

Oscar for 'Gandhi'
Bhanu Athaiya was awarded the Best Costume Designer Award at the Oscars in 1983 for director Richard Attenborough's film 'Gandhi'. As a costume designer he worked in more than 100 films. He last worked for Aamir Khan's Lagaan and Shah Rukh Khan's Swadesh.



In 2012, Bhanu Athaiya announced the return of the Oscar award. He said that his family and the Government of India were not able to maintain this invaluable award. For this reason, the museum of the award academy will be the most secure and well-organized.
