Coal scam: Former Union Minister Dilip Ray gets three-year sentence

 Former Union Minister Dilip Ray has been sentenced to three years in the coal scam case. A special CBI court in Delhi sentenced former Union Minister Dilip Ray to three years in a coal scam case related to irregularities in allocation of a coal block in Jharkhand in 1999.

In this case, the court has also sentenced two other people including former Union Minister Dilip Ray to three years. Also, a fine of Rs 10 lakh has been imposed on all three.

Apart from Dilip Ray, the CBI special court also convicted two senior officials of the coal ministry, Pradeep Kumar Banerjee and Nitya Nand Gautam, Castron Technologies Limited (CTL), its directors Mahendra Kumar Aggarwal and Castron Mining Ltd (CML). The CBI court has imposed a fine of Rs 60 lakh on CTL and Rs 10 lakh on CML.

Earlier this month, the court had convicted Dilip Ray, Minister of State (Coal) in the Vajpayee government, for criminal conspiracy and other offenses. Significantly, the special court had recently convicted Dilip Ray in a case related to the coal scam.

His case related to irregularities in allocation of Jharkhand coal block in 1999. Special Judge Bharat Parashar found Dilip Ray guilty under the Prevention of Corruption Act, while others were convicted of cheating and conspiracy. Dilip Ray was the Minister of State for Coal in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. Dilip Ray, a founding member of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), was very close to Biju Patnaik.
