Big deal to Bengal, Rs 8,575 crore sanctioned for East-West Metro corridor

Kolkata:
Central Government has given a big gift to Bengal. In the meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday, several crores of rupees were approved for Kolkata East-West Metro corridor. The East-West Metro Corridor project has been sanctioned Rs 8,575 crore for completion and aims to complete it by December 2021.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said that the East-West Metro Corridor of Kolkata was approved 12 years ago. At that time the cost of this project was about 4000 crores. But the state government was unable to help in everything from land acquisition to the metro corridor. The project work was done in small pieces. In such a situation, work was still incomplete at many places.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said that to complete this project, the cabinet today approved a budget of Rs 8,575 crore for it. He said that the decision of the cabinet is a big gift for the people of Kolkata. The project will be completed by December 2021.

He said that the 16.6 km long East-West Metro Corridor project would take Mass Rapid Transport to a new height. He said that this will benefit the people living in Kolkata North, 24 Parganas and Howrah districts from the metro corridor and about eight lakh people will travel daily.

It may be noted that on Sunday itself, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurated the first underground station Phulbagan of East-West Metro. The metro line from Sector Five to Saltlake Stadium was above ground. But the train is passing through the tunnel from the stadium to this Phulbagan station.

On Sunday, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurated the virtually Phulbagan metro station. The same day, he said that the target is to complete the work of the East-West Metro by next year. That is, the metro will start till December 2021. However, he did not say anything about increasing the budget allocation that day.
