All madrasas to be closed soon in Assam

Guwahati: The
Assam government has taken a major decision regarding all religious education centers in the state. BJP party MLA and state education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that a notification would be issued about the closure of all state-run madrasas in the coming month in November.

He said that about 100 Sanskrit schools will also be closed in the state. Himanta Biswa said that there is no provision for giving religious education to the general public, hence government madrasas will no longer be operated. Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that all the state-run madrasas would be converted into regular schools or in some cases teachers would be shifted to state-run schools and the madrasas would be closed.

Talking to the media, the minister said, "In my opinion, the teaching of the Quran cannot be done at the cost of government money. If we have to do this, we should also teach both the Bible and the Bhagavad Gita." Therefore, we want to bring uniformity and stop this practice. Madrasas are educational institutions where Quran and Islamic law are taught along with mathematics, grammar, poetry and history.
