New Delhi: Service to humanity and the nation has been a tradition of our value system. Its roots are buried in our tradition where it has been said that it is difficult to understand and assess service objectives. President Ramnath Kovind said these things while addressing an award distribution function in New Delhi.
Citing the example of Mahatma Gandhi, President Kovind said that service should not be only towards human beings but also towards nature. Reiterating that the National Service Scheme was launched on the 100th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. He said that even today the plan has immense relevance. He lauded the awarding of the awards even during the challenging times of the Kovid epidemic and praised the efforts of the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.
Talking about the NSS, President Kovind commented that it encouraged the youth to work voluntarily for community service through various measures that fit its motto of 'not me but you'. He said that the fact that 40 lakh students of various educational institutions are associated with this noble scheme is an encouraging phenomenon and also assures that the future of our country is in safe hands.
Emphasizing the activities conducted by the young volunteers, the President said that the volunteers were helpful in spreading awareness about social distance and proper use of masks during Kovid-19. These volunteers were also instrumental in providing food and other essential useful products to the patients kept in quarantine and isolation during this period. He said that apart from this, these volunteers have also always helped with open heart in providing relief and rehabilitation to the victims of flood and earthquake.
President Kovind also praised that 14 out of 42 awardees are girls, which is a reassuring and encouraging thing. The women of our country are following the tradition of Savitribai Phule, Kasturba Gandhi and Mother Teresa in serving the nation.
