New Delhi: Google on any special occasion makes a doodle and remembers great people in a special way. Today Google has remembered Indian swimmer Aarti Saha by making a doodle on her 80th birth anniversary. The face Google has missed is Aarti Saha and the glow in her eyes was not to complete a normal race, but to swim across the English Channel.
Aarti Saha is not just the name of a swimmer, but the name of an example, which breaks stereotypes and makes its way. Aarti Saha was the first woman to be awarded the Padma Shri in the year 1960. Aarti Saha is called the mermaid of India. Aarti Saha was born on 24 September 1940 in Kolkata.
He learned to swim on the banks of the Hooghly River. He later trained under the supervision of one of India's best competitive swimmers, Sachin Nag. Saha won her first gold medal at the age of five. By the age of 11, he had broken several swimming records. At the age of 12, Saha competed in the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki, the capital of Finland. She was among the first team from India to participate. Saha was one of the four women included in the team.
At the age of 18, he attempted to cross the English Channel. After a failed attempt, she was able to complete the journey. She became the first Asian woman to do so. Let us tell you that the pilot boat of Aarti did not arrive on time on the day of the race and they had to start the race with a delay of 40 minutes.
Aarti had advanced only 5 miles from the coast that she faced dangerous weather. After fighting for 6 hours with the flow of water, Aarti had to leave the race due to the pressure of the pilot. But Aarti did not lose courage. He trained again for a month and made another attempt to defeat the English Channel.
On September 29, 1959, Aarti took the second attempt. Aarti reached Sandgate after being hit by waves and strong currents for 16 hours, 20 minutes. Arriving at the shore, Aarti waved the tricolor. The Indian Post considered her life as a motivator for women and also released a postage stamp in 1998, honoring her. Google has once again reminded India of her pride by remembering Aarti Saha.
