England veteran batsman Ian Bell has said that he will say goodbye to cricket after the 2020 season. The 38-year-old played his last match for England in 2015. He, however, continues to play county cricket from Warwickshire.
Bell, however, did not play the 2019 season due to injury. This year he also appeared to be struggling for runs.
Bell is quoted as saying on the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) website, "I am deeply saddened, but also proud that I am announcing my retirement from professional cricket. Tomorrow will be my final match of red ball And next week I will play the last T20 match of my career. "
He said, "The sport I love the most and what I am passionate about will always be there. My body is not able to meet the demand of sports at this time."
He said, "It has been an honor for me to fulfill my childhood dream of playing for England and Warwickshire. As a child it was a big thing for me to have a dream of playing for one of them, but it was Doing it for 22 years has been more than I wished for. "
The right-handed batsman said, "To be part of the England team that has achieved the status of the world's No. 1 team, win five Ashes series, one of which I was named Player of the Series, winning the Test series in India was that young. It was a big thing for the player who just wanted to bat for Edgbaston. "
Bell has indicated that he might try his hand at coaching later. He coached England Lions last winter.
Bell, who is counted among England's greatest batsmen, comes third in the list of batsmen who have scored the most runs for his country in ODIs. He has played 97 Test matches for his country and scored 7823 runs at an average of 47.99. He has played 161 ODIs for England and scored 5416 runs at an average of 37.86. He has 188 runs in 8 matches in T20 Internationals. He was the highest run-scorer for England in ODIs but was overtaken by current captains - Eoin Morgan and Joe Root.
