England, on the basis of their bowlers' best bowling, beat Australia by 24 runs in the second ODI match played at Old Trafford ground on Sunday to achieve a 1-1 draw in the three-match ODI series. Australia lost their four wickets within three runs, which was the biggest reason for their defeat. The third and decisive ODI between the two teams will be played on Wednesday.
England won the toss, batting first, scored 231 runs for nine wickets, and then dismissed Australia for 207 runs in 48.4 overs.
For Australia, captain Aaron Finch scored the highest innings of 73 runs with the help of eight fours and a six off 105 balls. Apart from him, Marnus Labushan contributed 48, Alex Carrie 36 and Pat Cummins contributed 11 runs. The rest of the batsmen could not reach even double digits.
Joffra Archer, bowling brilliantly for England, took three wickets for 34 runs in 10 overs and got the man of the match award, besides Chris Woakes and Sam Curran three and Tom Curran took one wicket each.
Earlier, Australia did not allow England to score big after winning the toss and batting. The hosts finally managed to reach 231 runs, losing nine wickets in 50 overs on the basis of a 76-run partnership for the ninth wicket between Adil Rashid (35 not out) and Tom Kurain (37).
England lost their eight wickets for a total of just 149 runs. Looking at the performance of the Australian bowlers, it seemed that England would return to the pavilion early, but the pair of Rashid and Kurain saved the team from a low score.
Rashid hit three fours and a six off 26 balls. Kurain faced 39 balls and hit five fours. Joffra Archer remained unbeaten on six runs.
England lost their first wicket as Johnny Bairstow for a total of 20. They were hunted by Michelle Stark. Jason Roy (21) was run out by Stoinis for England's two for 29.
In the middle overs, Joe Root and captain Eoin Morgan hoped to handle the team but could not execute it. Root managed to score 39 runs off 73 balls with the help of four fours and a six.
At the same time, Captain Morgan scored 42 runs from 52 balls and was the highest scorer of the team. He hit five fours in his innings. Chris Woakes also contributed 26 runs, but no player could convert a good start into a big innings.
In the end Rashid and Kurain took the responsibility and saved the team from being piled on low scores.
